DESCRIPTION OF THE PhD PROGRAM ON WATER AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

The faculty of the University of Alicante that develops this program is assigned to the University Institute of Water and Environmental Sciences of the University of Alicante (IUACA), center whose main purpose is to promote better knowledge and management of water resources and analyze the associated aspects that are related to the conservation and improvement of the environment. It is made up of professors and researchers from the University of Alicante and from other universities and institutions that carry out their activity in subjects related to the integral cycle of water use, and its relationship with environmental sustainability. The IUACA collaborates internally with Departments, Faculties, Schools and Institutes of the University of Alicante, and externally with other public or private institutions, national or foreign, with competences or interests in these matters.

The multidisciplinary program offers doctoral theses within the research lines developed by IUACA members. The University of Alicante is located in the south-east of Spain, which is an area where the water problem is very accentuated. A series of activities that cause a great demand for water converge: implementation of agricultural activities, dynamic business sector, occupation of the territory, tourism sector, seasonal and permanent, services and recreational sector, golf courses or theme parks, etc. This great demand is not covered by the available natural resources, which are very limited and with long periods of drought, which causes a structural deficit of water resources, as well as pollution of rivers and aquifers due to overexploitation. For this reason, contributions of external resources are required through water transfers from other basins, as well as unconventional resources from desalination and reuse of wastewater. Thus, a doctoral program that allows advances in the appropriate and sustainable management throughout the cycle of water use and its economic, social and environmental implications is necessary and of great social interest. Naturally, the interest of this program is not only local, and the problem manifests itself in a large part of the Mediterranean Basin, other regions of Spain, and, of course, in many other regions of the world, where there is a structural or conjunctural deficit of water resources, both in terms of quantity and quality.

OBJECTIVES OF THE PhD

  • Admission profile:

The recommended profile for the Doctoral Program in Water and Sustainable Development of the University of Alicante is that of students who have completed master's studies in subjects related to Water and the Environment, or have a technical scientific training (undergraduate / bachelor's degree / studies postgraduate degree) such that it allows them to integrate without difficulty in any of the research lines of this program.

  • Admission criteria and documentation requested by the academic committee of the program:

The criteria established by the Academic Committee of the Doctoral Program are based on the merit and capacity of the applicants and are the following:

a) Academic record of access to the doctoral program.

b) Degree of affinity of the student's previous education with the profile of the program. The studies of the official master's degree in Sustainable Management and Water Technologies promoted and taught by IUACA and other related institutions will be especially valued. In the cases in which the students had not taken the IUACA master's degree, the Academic Committee of the Doctorate Program will dictate the degree of relationship with the same.

c) Knowledge of English, the language commonly used in the scientific community related to the present doctoral program.

d) Personal interview with the applicant.

e) Letters of endorsement or presentation of the applicant by professors of the University or of other research institutions, who have direct knowledge of the capacity and competence of the applicant.

  •  To facilitate the assessment of the admission application, you must provide the following documentation:

a) Requirements of the Doctorate School (EDUA). More info .

b) Additional documentation for this program:

- Curriculum vitae.

- Academic record.

- Documentation accrediting foreign language: English.

ORIGINALITY OF THE RESEARCH

When carrying out an academic work it is essential to clearly identify which ideas and information have been taken from other sources or authors and which are properly the product of the author of the work. When the words or ideas of another person are used without mentioning it, a type of theft called plagiarism is committed. To avoid this, when copying, paraphrasing or taking the idea of a text, it is necessary to quote the source in the text itself, as well as its reference to the end of the work (depending on the reference system used in each work). At the University of Alicante we have tools to detect cases of fraud in research: more information

EGRESS AND EMPLOYABILITY PROFILE

The doctorate is the highest university qualification and its completion increases the chances of accessing better paid jobs. In addition, it allows the development of specific teaching competences and the carrying out of research projects associated with specialized research lines. The new doctors can open the doors of new job opportunities: local, regional, national or European public administration; consulting or services companies, dedicated to the planning and management of water resources and their associated infrastructures; teaching and research; including technology entrepreneurship and transfer.

ACADEMIC GUIDANCE AND PROFESSIONAL ORIENTATION

The team responsible for the study plan analyses the information related to the labor market related to the degree in question, through the reports of the Graduate and Labor Insertion Surveys. As a result of the previous analysis, the Management Team defines the improvement actions aimed at career guidance. The forecast of the percentage of doctoral students who obtain grants for postdoctoral contracts is estimated at 50% of graduates. The percentage of PhD students who can foreseeably enter the labor market in the three years after reading their thesis is estimated to be over 80%.
