The University Institute of Water and Environmental Sciences of the University of Alicante, UIWES, was created in February of 1991 by the Government of the region of Valencia. It has as its main purpose to promote the best knowledge and management of water resources and analyse the current challenges for the preservation and improvement of environmental.

It is made up with professors and researchers of the University of Alicante as well as other universities and institutions that carry out their activities in subjects related to the integral cycle of water and its relation with the environmental sustainability. A significant feature of the Institute composition is its highly multidisciplinary character. Members belong to different areas of knowledge, covering the scientific, technical, economic, social and legal sectors involved in the thematic of water and environment.

In order to fulfill its aims, the UIWES collaborates internally with Departments, Schools and Institutes of the University of Alicante; externally, it collaborates with other public or private institutions, national or foreign, with interest and expertise in these matters.

The UIWES carries out teaching activities as well as research in such areas.

Teaching

UIWES offers an Official Postgraduate Program OPP in Integral Management of the Water. It includes the Master in Sustainable Management and Technologies of Water, adapted to the European Space of Upper Education, whose first edition was offered in 2006/2007. The purpose of the Master Degree is to provide students with a powerful qualification and professionalization in high technology and competitiveness in water management and water technologies. Our approach includes opportunities for research since every student would prepare a research project as a relevant activity of the Master degree. Under our PHD program students can prepare their Doctoral dissertation on a topic related to the different areas of research that members of the UIWES carry out.

On the other hand, from the academic year 1991/1992, and during XII years,  the Institute has been offering the Master in Management and Treatment of the Water. In addition, UIWES carry out multidisciplinary courses in water and environmental areas, offering such opportunity to students attending the last year of the degrees, as well as to professionals of the industrial sector.
